Life Affirming at Christmas Time
Is it possible, to find a way of being human that is life affirming; to live a life affirming this concrete world and accepting the human family as real true members of God’s great family in all their otherness.
This time of the Western year, is supposed to be about Jesus, about his life and the legacy he left us of peaceful, loving, relationships toward all others. The Kingdom of the Father, or the kingdom of heaven was Jesus mission. There are many ways of being human, but few are rooted in a love that is an actual passion for the otherness of others. We want friends who are like us, who think like us and act like us. We feel safe in this company.
But Jesus directed our attention toward people who were unlike us.
Resentment is a repressed unconscious hostility against life and its otherness (Breech read his article this site). Beliefs such as hell, sin and judgment falsify our consciousness about reality. “Resist not evil”. Live by not resisting evil, that was the path Jesus chose.
Jesus focus was on the otherness of actual people. He ate with these people. An observant Jew would not eat with such people. He responded to the free being of the other. His mode of being human showed no discontent with the actual other, but affirmed a world full of human beings in their otherness, and God’s love for the whole human race, in all their otherness. (Read Breech on this site)
Reality does not mean material things. We need not devote our lives to such things, but to our role in the great drama of the universe.
“The great news of our time is the evolutionary story in which we come to realise that we humans are all embedded in a living developing universe, and that therefore we are cousins to everything in the universe.” Brian Swimme.
